Last weekend we took the kids to a little stable in Essex for a pony ride. The autumn sun was low, casting long shadows as the ponies plodded along the bridle path, past hedgerows and muddy puddles. My daughter held the reins tightly, her face a mix of concentration and pure joy. It was one of those simple, perfect country afternoons.
