3일(현지기간) 로이터 통신은 프로페시아 부작용과 관련해 뉴욕 연수단원에 제기된 소송 관련 자료를 입수해 이같이 보도했다. 프로페시아 제조사가 우울감 등의 부작용 염려가 있음에도 이를 숨겼다는 것이다. 의학계에서 프로페시아의 원재료인 피나스테리드를 복용할 경우 안타까운 선택 및 우울감 위험이 높다는 연구 결과가 잇따라 발표됐지만 FDA는 위험한 선택과 관련한 경고 문구를 의무화하지 않았다.
테스트진은 그 원인을 세포 밖 환경, 세포외기질(ECM)과 세포를 연결하는 구조인 헤미데스모좀에서 찾았다. 헤미데스모좀은 수많은 단백질로 이뤄져 있어 세포와 세포외기질을 뻣뻣하게 연결하고, 세포가 일상적인 기능을 하는 데 도움을 준다고 알려져 있다.
